The Rufous-tailed Hawk is found in southern Argentina and Chile, including the entire region ofTierra del Fuego.
Its natural habitats are temperate forests, subtropical or tropical dry shrubland, subtropical or tropical high-altitude shrubland, and temperate grassland.
